     Nancy Heddle Graduate from the Medical Laboratory Science program at Mohawk College in 1969. She has spent most of her career in Transfusion Medicine working in the Hamilton Hospitals as a technologist, a manager, an educator, a researcher and a mentor. She completed a Masters degree in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University in 1992 and subsequently used clinical research methodology to investigate many research questions that focused on improving blood transfusion safety.

     Nancy is currently a Professor in the Department of Medicine, McMaster University and is an Associate Member in Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact (HEI) and the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine. She is also an Adjunct Scientist, Centre for Innovation, Canadian Blood Services. As the Director of the McMaster Transfusion Research Program she works collaboratively with clinicians, research Faculty and biostatisticians to address a wide variety of transfusion questions using quantitative, qualitative and mixed method techniques. Her current areas of research include: hemophilia; appropriate use of blood products; improving methodology when using bleeding as an outcome measure in clinical trials; and advancing the safety of blood transfusion by understanding the impact of red cell storage on patient outcomes.

      During her career she has trained over 200 physicians and medical technology students in transfusion science. She has published over 130 scientific papers, given numerous presentations nationally and internationally and has received national and international awards. In 2002 she was the recipient of the Premier’s Award in Health Sciences, from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. She was the first Canadian to receive the Ivor Dunsford Memorial Award from the AABB and International Woman in Transfusion award from the International Society of Blood Transfusion. In 2013 she was the recipient of the Emil von Behring Award given by the German Society of Blood Transfusion.
